Not all sunburn and pedestal fans
Josh Gurney | December 2016

Spring has promptly sprung to an end. Warmer days, howling northerlies and evening thunderstorms have set the scene for another cliché summer, but it’s not all sunburn and pedestal fans – summer brings with it a host of good fishing. The Tweed area particularly fires up this season. As the mercury rises, we can expect to see good scores of mangrove jack through the river and creeks. In the offshore department, mackerel, marlin, mahimahi, tuna and trevally should all start to push up the coast as the water temperature rises.

Looking danger in the face

Scott and his terrifically fought mulloway prize!

Up Cobaki way it’s been very quiet fishing wise. Every time I head there I’m dumbfounded by the amount of debris floating around, from grass clippings to weed and logs, as well as a heap of rubbish. In some places it’s impossible to get a cast in and I found it pretty similar up at Terranora Broadwater. Terra is holding a lot of fish around the Jew Hole in particular on the run out. If you get there early try a surface lure on the high tide in the oyster leases for some cracking bream. There’s lots of small tailor in the river too and they are the perfect schoolie attraction, so expect to see a few showing up in the area.

All set for great winter whiting
David Solano | June 2016

Pete Kyvetos with a massive cobia caught offshore during a delightful weather window.

The Tweed area is producing a huge catch rate at the moment, and if you’re into crabbing, you’re in for a good time. The muddies are out in numbers, and so are sand crabs, try using a dilly for the sandies – you’ll find them out toward the middle of the river, whereas the mud crabs tend to hang in the mangroves and weed beds.

Fresh flush shuts down the bite

Dave with a nice flathead taken in the Tweed River.

If you’re a midnight trevally stalker like me, you are going to love the Tweed at the moment, as those big bruising bandits are running amok throughout the river system.

Get a massive mud crab in your pot!

Ben Rampling with a monster mud crab.

April and May is our pelagic season, where better quality fish come out to play and rip line off our reels. If you want to tick a big Spanish mackerel or longtail tuna off the bucket list now is the time to put in the maximum amount of effort.

Anthony Solano with a nice feed caught in the Tweed.

Around seven weeks ago, Pete Kyvetos (a mate of mine), bought a sea going boat and hasn’t been able to take it outside as every weekend it’s been blowing a gale. I can tell it’s getting to him as he is dying to get out with me and get into some awesome Tweed fishing. Now we wait patiently for the weather to play the game!
